About the Course
Many schools face a persistent challenge: how to design and sustain a robust English Language Development (ELD) block that not only builds language proficiency but also accelerates academic achievement for English learners. Too often, ELD instruction is fragmented, disconnected from core content, and fails to leverage students’ linguistic assets or engage them in meaningful, real-world learning.
This module addresses that gap by empowering educators to create ELD programs that are systematic, concept-driven, and deeply integrated with rigorous curriculum. Through interactive workshops and hands-on coaching, participants will learn to seamlessly align language objectives with content standards, ensuring students develop the language skills necessary to access and express complex ideas across disciplines.
Educators will practice strategies for scaffolding and differentiation, such as using sentence frames to support academic discussions or leveraging students’ home languages to deepen understanding. They will see how culturally responsive teaching and interdisciplinary connections can transform ELD blocks into vibrant spaces for critical thinking, collaboration, and authentic communication. By the end of this 3-day module, educators will be equipped to move beyond compliance and create an ELD block that truly prepares multilingual learners for college, career, and civic life.
